NE 724 Reactor Heat Transfer

3 Credit Hours

Consideration of heat transfer and fluid flow in nuclear power reactors. Topics include derivation of the of time dependent flow equations used in simulation of reactor systems, numerical solutions to single and two phase flow problems in flow networks.

Prerequisite

NE 402/502 Reactor Engineering and either NE 401 Reactor Analysis and Design or NE 520 Radiation and Reactor Fundamentals.

Course Objectives

At the completion of the course, the student is expected to:

  • Numerically solve multi-dimensional partial differential equations governing reactor heat transfer and fluid flow
  • Model single and two phase flow network problems
  • Formulate and derive consistent sets of multi-phase flow equations

Course Requirements

HOMEWORK: 5 to 8 assignments over the course of the semester

EXAMINATIONS: None

PROJECTS: Two computational semester projects

SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS: Access to a high level programming language (e.g. FORTRAN), access to mathematical and scientific software such as Mathcad, Maple, or Matlab.
