NE 502 Reactor Engineering

3 Credit Hours

Thermal-hydraulic design and analysis of nuclear systems. Single and two-phase flow, boiling heat transfer, modeling of fluid systems. Design constraints imposed by thermal-hydraulic considerations are discussed. Credit will not be given for bothNE 402 and NE 502.


Either Nuclear Reactor Energy Conversion (NC State NE 400), Heat Transfer Fundamentals (NC State MAE 310) or equivalent Fluid Mechanics (NC State MAE 308)

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Identify and discuss the flow boiling regimes expected in nuclear power systems
  2. Determine the heat transfer from a boiling surface
  3. Evaluate the potential for critical heat flux in nuclear power systems
  4. Model single-phase flow networks and evaluate the performance of systems based on these models
  5. Model two-phase flow systems and evaluate the performance of systems based on these models

Course Requirements

Homework: Five to Six assignments made over the course of the semester

Examinations: One midterm examination and the final exam

Projects: Two semester projects involving modeling of single and two-phase flow systems
