MAE 708 Advanced Convective Heat Transfer

3 Credit Hours

This course is designed to be the core graduate course in convection heat transfer. Advanced topics in steady and transient, natural and forced convective heat transfer for laminar and turbulent flow through conduits and over surfaces. Mass transfer in laminar and turbulent flow. Inclusion of topics on biological flow and mass transfer.

Prerequisite

The course is open to students from all areas of engineering. Undergraduate course in convective heat transfer and fluid flow or consent of instructor.

Course Objectives

Students will:

  • Develop basic fundamental understanding of governing equations for convection heat transfer.
  • Learn about velocity and thermal boundary layers.
  • Master similarity solutions and integral solutions.
  • Study heat transfer to fully developed duct flow.
  • Learn external natural convection and internal natural convection.
  • Learn fundamentals of turbulent boundary layer flow and duct flow.
  • Master the time-averaged equations.
  • Study the mixing length model.
  • Learn turbulent boundary layer solutions.
  • Master turbulent duct flow solutions.
  • Gain an appreciation of biological flow and mass transport problems by doing a bio-related class project.

Course Requirements

EXAMINATIONS: Two take home exams 50% (25% each).

PROJECTS: A course project will be assigned during the semester. An individual or group (if students choose to work in groups) course project report will be required, which contributes 30% to the grade.

PROJECT PRESENTATION: Every student (or a group of students working on the same project) must prepare a presentation on his/her (or their) research project. The presentation must be prepared professionally, using the PowerPoint software, and given in class during the last two weeks of the semester. Students are encouraged to demonstrate simulations, animations, and visualizations in their presentations (make their presentations as illustrative as possible). The quality of presentation will contribute 20% in the grade. The duration of the presentation should be approximately 20 minutes plus 5 minutes for questions.
