MAE 518 Acoustic Radiation I

3 Credit Hours

Introduction to principles of acoustic radiation from vibrating bodies and their related fields. The radiation of simple sources, propagation of sound waves in confined spaces and transmission through different media.

Prerequisite

An undergraduate course in thermodynamics and an undergraduate course in fluid mechanics or consent of instructor.

Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to provide the student with the tools necessary to calculate the acoustic pressure field generated by vibrating surfaces, and to evaluate the pressure transmission and reflection associated with various media.

Course Requirements

HOMEWORK: Approximately eight (8) homework assignments of associated acoustic problems will be made. The problems will be due approximately one week after the assignment. (20%)

EXAMINATIONS: Two (2) in-class exams will occur. The exam with the lower grade takes 15% and the other one takes 25%.

SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS: MATLAB will be used.

PROJECTS: There will be a final project (40%)
