MAE 501 Advanced Engineering Thermodynamics

3 Credit Hours

Classical thermodynamics of a general reactive system; conservation of energy and principles of increase of entropy; fundamental relation of thermodynamics; Legendre transformations; phase transitions and critical phenomena; equilibrium and stability criteria in different representation; Multicomponent systems; Multiphase systems including phase equilibrium; Chemical reactions.

Prerequisite

Undergraduate thermodynamics and advanced calculus or consent of instructor.

Course Objectives

Application of the 1st and 2nd law of thermodynamics to engineering systems. Development of equations of state and thermodynamic property relations. Multi-component and multiphase system analysis. Equilibrium chemical reaction calculations.

EXAMINATIONS: Three 75 minute exams and one 3 hour final exam

Optional: Bejan, Adrian, John Wiley, Fourth Edition, Advanced Engineering Thermodynamics, 2016. ISBN: 978-1-119-05209-8. The 2nd & 3rd edition would also be fine.

Optional: An undergraduate-level thermodynamics textbook.
