CHE 711 Chemical Engineering Process Modeling

3 Credit Hours

Applications of methods for mathematical analysis to formulation and solution of problems in transport phenomena, process dynamics, and chemical reaction engineering.

Prerequisite

Undergraduate courses in heat, mass and momentum transport and in differential equations or consent of instructor.

Course Objectives

To develop skills to formulate, solve, and analyze mathematical models of systems of interest to chemical engineers.

Topics include: model building; review or ordinary differential equations; Bessel functions; Laplace transforms; Sturm-Liouville systems; solution to partial differential equations by separation of variables, similarity solutions, and Laplace and Fourier transforms; introduction to numerical solutions of initial-and boundary-value problems; perturbation methods; and introduction to calculus or variations.

Course Requirements

Complete homework assignments and three exams.
